Meet Your Future Self: The Most Important Business Relationship You're Neglecting
Mar 09, 2025
Hey there,
There's someone important I'd like you to meet. Someone who thinks about you every day, who's profoundly affected by every decision you make in your business. Someone whose life gets easier or harder based on the choices you're making right now.
It's your future self. β¨
We don't talk enough about this relationship in business – the one between who we are today and who we'll be tomorrow. But it might be the most important relationship of all.
Your future self is sending you messages
That nudge you feel to finally raise your prices? The quiet voice suggesting you set aside a little more for taxes? The gut feeling that you should review your numbers before making that big purchase?
That's not random anxiety. That's your future self, reaching backward through time, trying to guide you.
When I started listening to these messages in my own business, everything shifted. I realized I'd been approaching financial decisions all wrong – thinking only about immediate relief instead of long-term freedom.
Every financial choice is a time capsule
Each decision you make today is a package you're sending forward in time to your future self. Some of these packages contain gifts: systems that create ease, savings that provide options, boundaries that prevent burnout.
Others contain burdens: debt that limits choices, undercharging that leads to resentment, disorganization that creates tax-season panic.
The beautiful truth is that you get to choose which kind of packages you send.
Your future self is not a stranger
Close your eyes for a moment. Imagine yourself one year from today.
This version of you has navigated challenges you haven't faced yet. They've learned lessons you haven't learned. They have perspective you don't yet have.
But they're still you – with your same values, hopes, and vision. They just want things to be easier than they had to be.
Three questions that change everything
Whenever I face a financial decision in my business, I pause and ask:
- What would my future self advise about this choice?
- Will this decision create freedom or limitation for my future self?
- Am I making this choice from fear or from clarity?
These simple questions have saved me from countless decisions I would have regretted.
Start a conversation with your future self
Today, I invite you to write a short letter to your future self, one year from now. Ask what they wish you would focus on in your business finances right now. What systems do they wish you would build? What habits do they wish you would start?
Then get quiet and listen. The answer is already within you.
Your future self isn't an abstract concept – they're a real part of you, waiting for you to acknowledge the connection. When you make decisions from this relationship of care across time, your entire approach to business finances transforms.
I'd love to hear what you discover in this conversation with your future self. And if you want support in creating a financial path your future self will thank you for, I'm here to help.
With faith in your journey,
Melanie π
